Ring Cancels Flock Safety Deal Amid Privacy Backlash

Ring has abandoned its planned integration with Flock Safety after public criticism over surveillance concerns. The Amazon-owned company announced on February 12 it would not proceed with connecting its Community Requests feature to Flock's law enforcement platform, citing unexpected technical complexity.

Ring claimed no customer footage was ever shared during the planning phase. The proposed integration would have allowed law enforcement agencies using Flock's evidence management system to request video through a centralized platform rather than directly through Ring's app. While Ring emphasized this would maintain user control over footage sharing, privacy advocates viewed the partnership as expanding surveillance infrastructure.

The reversal comes as Ring faces heightened scrutiny over its law enforcement relationships and AI expansion. The company recently introduced features like Search Party for locating lost pets through neighborhood camera networks and Familiar Faces for on-device facial recognition. These AI tools, combined with Ring's extensive law enforcement partnerships, have transformed consumer doorbells into components of broader surveillance ecosystems.
