Removing Downloads from the Mac Dock eliminates its one-click Fan view, but the folder and its files remain on the computer. Here is how to restore Fan view on the Downloads folder. Apple treats Dock items as aliases that point to originals; removing a Dock alias changes only the Dock, so putting it back does not recover or duplicate files.

To restore Fan view, open Finder and choose Go, then Home, or press Shift-Command-H. Drag Downloads to the Dock beside the Trash. Control-click or right-click Downloads in the Dock, choose View Content As, then Fan, and choose Sort By, then Date Added.

Clicking an item in Fan view opens it in its associated app. Choose Open in Finder when the needed file isn't visible. The Dock's Display As and View Content As controls serve different purposes. Display As changes the icon, while View Content As chooses Fan, Grid, or List view. Fan prioritizes large icons over showing everything at once.

With Date Added selected, it works best when the newest few items matter, making it useful for Downloads, exports, and temporary work folders. For folders requiring searching, sorting, or file management, Finder's list view is more effective, as it can show dates, size, kind, iCloud status, and tags.
