Rave's App Store Removal: The Real Reason Behind the Lawsuit

Rave, a co-streaming app with roughly 11.4 million users, is suing Apple in five countries after being removed from the App Store in August 2025. The Canadian company claims Apple never provided a clear reason for the removal and accuses the tech giant of targeting a competitor to its own SharePlay feature.

The app's history reveals significant content moderation problems. For years, Rave's public chat rooms were largely unmoderated despite requiring users to be only 13 years old. Reports surfaced of child sexual abuse material, pornography, and gore appearing on the platform. The app also became known as a hub for scammers and bots, and Google temporarily pulled it for security concerns.

Rave's claim that Apple removed it to eliminate competition doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Apple hasn't banned Spotify, Netflix, or Disney+ despite offering competing services. When Apple introduces features that "Sherlock" third-party apps, it typically doesn't remove those apps—it just offers a native alternative.

Apple disabled Sign in with Apple for Rave and revoked its developer certificate, causing macOS to show false malware warnings. Rave has since implemented stricter moderation, but the damage appears done.
