macOS Tahoe Spotlight: New Clipboard, Shortcuts, and More

Apple's Spotlight feature has undergone its most significant transformation in years with macOS Tahoe, bringing power-user capabilities that once required third-party apps like Alfred and Raycast. The built-in tool now offers app launching, file searching, shortcut execution, and clipboard history management without additional software costs.

Spotlight has evolved from a simple search utility into a comprehensive productivity tool. Users can launch applications by pressing Command + Space and typing app names, with results displaying both Mac and iPhone apps through the iPhone Mirroring feature. The tool also indexes files across your system, allowing quick access to documents, images, and other content.

macOS Tahoe introduces App Intents integration, enabling Spotlight to execute specific app actions without opening the application. Users can send messages, create calendar events, or start timers directly from the search interface. The clipboard history feature represents Apple's first native solution for accessing copied items, storing text and files for up to eight hours by default.

Customization options in System Settings allow users to enable or disable features like related content, search history, and app integration. Privacy controls let users prevent Apple from using their data to improve search features. This comprehensive upgrade positions Spotlight as a legitimate alternative to paid productivity tools, potentially reducing the need for third-party applications.
