Mac gaming still fails despite Apple's powerful hardware

The state of Mac gaming remains a glaring mismatch with Apple's impressive hardware capabilities. Despite the M5 Max MacBook Pro's powerful 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU, it fails to deliver a compelling gaming experience. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, with its stunning display and massive battery, should be a gaming powerhouse but falls short in practice.

Mac gaming has never been better than today, yet it still lags far behind even basic Windows laptops. The core problem isn't hardware capability—Apple's silicon can handle demanding games—but rather the lack of available titles. Major releases like Cyberpunk 2077 arrived on Mac years after their initial debut, and many AAA games never make the journey to macOS at all.

Steam's top-selling games reveal the extent of the problem: only three of the current top ten are available for Mac. Popular titles like Arc Raiders and Resident Evil Requiem remain Windows-exclusive. Workarounds like Parallels Desktop and CodeWeavers' Crossover introduce performance overhead that undermines the Mac's gaming potential. Even Apple Arcade, while offering value, primarily delivers mobile games and ports rather than the desktop experiences Mac gamers crave. The Game Porting Toolkit shows Apple's awareness of the issue, but without developer buy-in, Mac gaming remains stuck in second place.
