The detection system uses sensors including accelerometers to determine when an iPhone has been forcefully taken. Apple may leverage connected devices like the Apple Watch to identify rapid separation from the user. The feature would also consider location factors such as known Wi-Fi networks or home/work locations to prevent false activations during normal device handovers.
