New in iOS 27 is a birthday reminder in the Phone app. If you're on a call with someone, your iPhone will let you know it's their special day with animated fireworks. The gift is still on you, though. Whether you remember to call them, or they call you, iOS 27 makes sure you know it's their birthday.

In the current betas, when you call someone, the Phone app checks the contact card for them. It does the same if they call you. If the card has their birthday and it's today, you get an unmissable notification with animated fireworks. You won't miss the banner—or the fireworks.

Apple's emphasis on privacy means the banner includes a small note: "Birthday - Found in Contacts." Tapping it takes you to the full Contacts card. This isn't Apple Intelligence, but it's the same thinking: using information on your device and surfacing it when needed. No data passed to third parties.

You could argue you need a reminder ahead of time to buy a gift. But it's a thoughtful addition, showing Apple considers how people use iPhones. Thanks to reader Brae for the tip.
