iOS 27 Messages Overhaul: Siri AI, Drawing, Customizable Controls

Apple's iOS 27 Messages app looks familiar but runs on a rebuilt foundation that makes it faster and far more capable. The standout addition is Siri AI integration: the assistant can now search conversations for specific photos, extract event details from invitation images, and move links between threads — all through natural-language prompts. In testing, Siri located Tennessee trip photos, parsed a baby shower invite from a fridge photo, and added it to Calendar in one flow.

Two practical UI fixes arrive first. The persistent audio button in the text field can now be reassigned to dictation, voice memos, or removed entirely via Settings > Apps > Messages > Show in Text Fields. A new Drawing app lives under the "+" menu, bringing the full Notes markup toolkit — pen, highlighter, shape recognition, image paste — directly into chats, with Apple Pencil support on iPad.

Contextual Suggestions surface one-tap actions inside conversations: relevant photos when someone asks for vacation shots, calendar creation from event invites, and reminder buttons for grocery requests. The system scans message content locally to propose these shortcuts, cutting four to five manual steps per task.

Beyond the headline features, RCS messaging improves, cross-device sync accelerates, Genmoji creation gets smoother, and failed messages retry automatically. The cumulative effect tightens Apple's ecosystem lock-in: Messages becomes a command center where Siri handles the busywork that used to require app-switching.
