FaceTime gains live translation captions in iOS 26

Apple finally rolled out live translated captions in FaceTime with iOS 26, letting one‑on‑one calls show real‑time subtitles in the user’s chosen language. The feature lives inside the existing Live Captions accessibility setting rather than a dedicated menu, which explains why many users missed it. Activating Live Captions in Settings enables the translation pipeline during calls. It works only on supported iOS devices.

Live translation works by capturing the speaker’s audio, converting it to text on‑device, then feeding it through Apple Intelligence’s conversational model to produce a readable caption in the target language. No synthesized voice replaces the original audio, preserving tone and emotion. The system requires Apple‑intelligence‑capable hardware, so support starts with iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and newer iPad Pro models. Older iPhones lack the necessary neural engine.

Because captions tolerate slight delays, they avoid the awkward pauses that plagued earlier audio‑only translation attempts. The on‑device approach also sidesteps cloud latency and privacy concerns. While idioms and rapid back‑and‑forth can still trip the model, the feature shines for short family catch‑ups or quick business check‑ins, delivering understandable context without altering the call’s natural flow. For multilingual teams, it reduces reliance on third‑party apps.
