CrossOver 27 Drops Intel Support, Goes Apple Silicon-Only

CrossOver 27 will require Apple Silicon Macs and 64-bit gaming bottles, ending support for Intel-based systems and 32-bit applications. The Windows compatibility layer for macOS has historically helped gamers run Windows titles on Mac hardware, but this update streamlines development by focusing exclusively on ARM64 architecture.

Developer CodeWeavers says roughly 97% of users already run macOS Sonoma or newer, minimizing the impact. The change allows the team to optimize performance and develop a new user interface without maintaining legacy Intel compatibility. ARM64 builds are coming for both Mac and Linux platforms.

Users still on Intel machines or older macOS versions can continue using CrossOver 26 indefinitely, though they risk compatibility issues as games receive updates. Newer operating systems may eventually cause problems with the older software.

This shift reflects Apple's transition timeline, as Intel Mac support was phased out between macOS Sonoma and macOS Golden Gate. For most CrossOver users, the change means improved performance and future features, while a small percentage will need to upgrade their hardware to continue using the latest version.
