Apple TV is set to premiere director Sian Heder's latest film, a biopic about disability activist Judy Heumann. Following the success of "CODA," which earned Apple TV its first Best Picture Oscar, Heder has directed a dramatization of Heumann's memoir.

Co-written by Heder and Rebekah Taussig, the film, titled "Being Heumann," stars Ruth Madeley as Heumann. Madeley, known for her roles in "Doctor Who" and "Years and Years," has spina bifida and uses a wheelchair, mirroring Heumann's own life experience after contracting polio as a child.

Heumann, often called the mother of the Disability Rights Movement, famously led the 1977 504 Sit-ins, protesting federal buildings to advocate for the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The film, based on Heumann's book, will open the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, followed by a theatrical release on November 6, and streaming on Apple TV from November 13. Heumann passed away in March 2023 at the age of 75.
