Apple Plans Limited Theatrical Release for Tenzing

Apple is breaking its 2026 streak of direct-to-streaming releases by bringing the film Tenzing to select theaters. After the success of F1 last year, the company has largely avoided cinema screens this year. This new biopic focuses on Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, played by Tom Hiddleston, during their historic ascent of Mount Everest.

Scheduled for a limited release on October 9, the film serves a specific strategic purpose. To qualify for the Academy Awards, a movie must complete a seven-day theatrical run. Apple intends to use this window to position the film as an Oscar contender before it arrives on its streaming platform just one week later on October 16.

Director Jennifer Peedom handles the production, which explores the cultural tensions and personal ambitions behind the first Everest summit. While Apple continues to build its slate with titles like Mayday and The Dink, this move signals a calculated effort to bridge the gap between streaming convenience and prestige awards recognition. The company is prioritizing awards eligibility over wide-scale box office reach.
