Carriers Partner for iPhone Satellite Coverage Expansion

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have formed an unexpected joint venture to boost cellular coverage for iPhone users using satellite technology. The agreement in principle aims to eliminate dead zones, particularly benefiting those in unserved and underserved communities by maintaining connections where ground networks fail.

This collaboration leverages satellite-based direct-to-device (D2D) technology. T-Mobile currently offers D2D for text and data, while AT&T announced similar functionality in 2024. The carriers plan to activate this system when traditional networks are disrupted by disasters or outages, filling critical connectivity gaps.

The venture does not specify which services—voice, text, or data—will be available via satellite, nor which devices beyond the iPhone will support it due to modem variations. This partnership marks a significant shift from competition to cooperation, directly addressing a long-standing consumer pain point of unreliable service in remote and disaster-affected areas.
