Apple's Satellite iPhone Case Could Enable Full Internet

Apple is researching an iPhone case that could transform satellite communication capabilities. A newly revealed patent application shows Apple developing a removable case with a phased array antenna that would allow full internet access via satellite, not just emergency messaging.

Currently, iPhone satellite features like Emergency SOS require users to manually point their device at passing satellites, with limited data transmission due to the phone's small antenna. The seven-minute window when a low Earth orbit satellite is visible is further reduced by buildings, trees, and terrain. Apple's software helps track satellites, but hardware limitations remain.

The proposed case would connect via Smart Connector or radio-frequency options and include beamforming circuitry. This design could overcome the current limitation where satellite signals are blocked when users hold their phones. While this would enable more data transmission, it raises questions about accessibility since users would need to anticipate needing satellite connectivity and purchase the accessory separately.
