Atari Secures Rights to Classic Wizardry RPGs

Atari confirmed it has acquired the "complete and exclusive rights" to the first five Wizardry titles, a franchise that debuted on the Apple II in the early 1980s. The deal covers the original games from *Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord* (1981) through *Heart of the Maelstrom* (1988), plus related IP such as character editors. Atari plans to republish, remaster, and bring console ports and physical releases to market.

The acquisition arrives after a 2024 remake that layered modern graphics over the Apple II interface, a project many fans found buggy. CEO Wade Rosen framed the move as a chance to revive an influential RPG series that has been unavailable for over two decades. By securing the early catalog, Atari hopes to capitalize on nostalgia while expanding its portfolio beyond recent blockchain experiments.

Co‑creator Robert Woodhead, who helped launch the series, welcomed Atari’s effort, noting the games were among the first to deliver a true role‑playing experience on personal computers. With the rights now in hand, Atari can finally offer updated versions that respect the original design, giving both longtime fans and new players access to the foundational titles of the genre.
