Assa Abloy trims Level staff, folds brand into Kwikset

Assa Abloy, the parent of Level Home, cut most of the smart‑lock maker’s staff and is folding the business into its Kwikset brand. The move follows the 2024 acquisition that added Level to a portfolio already holding Kwikset and Yale. Company officials say the remaining team will keep selling and supporting existing locks, so owners shouldn’t see immediate disruption and maintain warranty support for customers.

Basic lock and unlock commands through Apple Home and Matter continue to work because they run locally on the device in the short term. Cloud‑dependent features—mobile app control, auto‑unlock, and door‑status notifications—still rely on Level’s servers, which the company has not announced plans to shut down. If those services disappear, only the local functions would remain.

The restructuring saw co‑founders John Martin and Ken Goto exit alongside most engineers, leaving a small group to finish a multi‑family housing lock. While Assa Abloy assures continued investment in the smart‑lock segment, the loss of the original engineering team raises doubts about future firmware updates and new product launches. Existing Level locks will keep basic functionality for now.
