iPhone Air now matches Qualcomm's X80 chip in download speeds while outperforming it in latency, according to an Ookla report from March 22. The analysis of Q4 2025 Speedtest data shows Apple has closed the connectivity gap with its custom C1X modem, representing a major step in Apple's effort to replace Qualcomm silicon with its own.

Apple's real advantage comes in latency performance, beating Qualcomm in 19 out of 22 markets. This translates to faster response times for apps, web browsing, and cloud-based tasks. However, Apple still trails in upload scenarios, with the X80 maintaining up to a 32% lead in upload speeds due to more mature carrier aggregation support.

The findings mark a turning point for Apple's modem strategy, demonstrating the company can compete at the top end of smartphone connectivity. With tighter control over power efficiency and system behavior, Apple no longer depends on Qualcomm for flagship-level cellular performance, potentially paving the way for always-connected devices beyond the iPhone.
