Apple's $5.7B Haptic Feedback Trial Loss Likely Reduced

Apple was found guilty of infringing Taction Technology's patents in its Taptic Engine used in Apple Watch and other devices, with a jury awarding over $5.7 billion in damages. Legal firm Burford Capital claims it is entitled to $1.4 billion from the verdict, which initially boosted its US stock by over 6%. However, Burford Capital now cautions it is unlikely to receive the full sum, citing expectations that Apple will negotiate the award down during appeals or settlement.

The firm notes large awards are often reduced post-trial and suspects both parties will settle for a considerably lower amount. Apple maintains it disagrees with the verdict and claims the damages lack evidentiary support, planning to appeal. The lawsuit originated in April 2021, with prior rulings overturned due to improper expert testimony and claim limitations, leading to this retrial.

The case may continue for years as appeals proceed.
