Apple Stalls Siri AI in Europe Over DMA Clash

Apple exposed its new Siri AI during WWDC, then openly declared the feature would skip European users. The move aimed to pin responsibility on the EU for blocking access. By highlighting the Digital Markets Act, Apple framed the dispute as a legal hurdle rather than a product delay for innovators and developers who seek equality.

Greg Joswiak briefed journalists after the keynote, noting Apple had already shared Siri AI plans with Brussels in early 2026 to avoid launch delays seen with AirPods Pro translation. The EU’s demand that rivals receive identical access on day one clashes with Apple’s privacy safeguards, a tension that could stall the feature indefinitely for users.

Apple proposed a Trusted System Agent to grant rivals access while shielding user data, but Brussels rejected the idea as an extreme interpretation of the DMA. With no engineers currently adapting Siri AI for the EU, the company faces a $570 million fine and a prolonged legal battle that leaves European customers in limbo for future.

If the Commission sticks to its stance, Siri AI may never reach EU markets. Consumers will miss out on advanced voice features that competitors already offer, widening the gap between American and European app ecosystems. Until a compromise emerges, the EU’s regulatory grip keeps the latest Apple innovation locked behind borders for everyone in Europe.
