Apple Glass 2027 Launch Faces Privacy Trust Challenges

Apple Glass is still expected to launch in 2027, but Apple faces a significant privacy trust challenge stemming from consumer distrust of Meta's smart glasses. In his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports Apple will introduce its first smart glasses at WWDC in 2027, with a consumer release by year-end, giving developers time to build apps.

Meta's privacy failures have poisoned the well for smart glasses. Consumers are uncomfortable with head-worn cameras and the stealthy recording possibility, viewing them as worse than smartphone cameras. While Meta added indicator lights to address fears, its reputation remains damaged.

Apple plans to leverage its privacy reputation with on-device processing, avoiding facial recognition and Meta's "super-sensing" mode. It pledges not to use recordings for AI training or third-party contractors. Apple is also prototyping camera-less versions focused on AI features, calls, and audio.

With a year before release, Apple must convince the public its glasses aren't privacy-destroying devices.
