Apple Eyes Under‑Screen Face ID for iPhone 18 Pro

Apple is reportedly mandating under‑display infrared (UDIR) for its next‑generation high‑end OLED panels, a move that could shift Face ID from the Dynamic Island to a seamless front‑screen. The change is slated for the iPhone 18 Pro, hinting at a cleaner display and tighter sensor integration, and 5G connectivity for future applications.

Apple’s design push relies on advanced LTPO OLED backplanes and the only manufacturers capable of meeting the dual UDIR and LTPO demands: Samsung Display and LG Display. Both firms have invested heavily in materials that preserve brightness while allowing infrared transmission, a critical hurdle for under‑screen biometrics in future generations.

While UDIR clears an architectural hurdle, Apple has yet to confirm a fully under‑screen Face ID rollout. The company may first trim the Dynamic Island or introduce a small camera cutout, keeping some sensors exposed. Industry watchers will monitor the iPhone 18 Pro launch for concrete changes and future design iterations ahead.
