Apple Accelerates Security Patches to Counter AI-Powered Hackers

Apple is rushing critical security updates to users more quickly, abandoning its traditional schedule to combat AI-assisted hacking threats. The company released iOS 26.5.2 on Monday rather than waiting for the planned iOS 26.6 update in July 2026, addressing over 25 vulnerabilities including WebKit flaws that could expose clipboard data and sensitive user information.

This shift follows mounting evidence that artificial intelligence helps attackers discover exploits faster than conventional methods. Previously, Apple would bundle minor security fixes into routine releases unless a vulnerability was actively exploited. The change means patches now ship immediately after discovery, though it raises concerns about user fatigue from frequent update notifications.

The move comes after Anthropic's Mythos AI successfully bypassed macOS security in May 2026 by combining multiple bugs rather than finding single vulnerabilities. That incident prompted Apple to patch the exploit in macOS Tahoe 26.5, demonstrating how AI tools are reshaping cybersecurity challenges.

While Apple offers automatic background updates through its Background Security Improvements feature, users can still opt out. This creates tension between rapid protection and user autonomy, especially since older devices like iPhone XR and XS Max cannot upgrade to iOS 26, requiring patches on legacy iOS 25 versions instead.
