Samsung's Galaxy S26 Plus Needs the Edge's DNA

Samsung appears to have canceled the Galaxy S26 Edge, a device meant to challenge Apple's iPhone Air but hampered by significant compromises. The company's three-device S-series strategy will likely continue, leaving the often-underperforming Plus model in an awkward position. The Plus has always been the least popular sibling, with its $999 price tag failing to justify minor upgrades over the base model.

Analyst Anshel Sag notes the Plus "has always performed the worst," a problem mirrored by Apple's own Plus models. The ill-fated Edge sold poorly due to a smaller battery, slower charging, and fewer cameras than even the base S25, all at a higher premium. Its failure stemmed from unrealistic expectations and poor marketing around battery life and durability.

Samsung's path forward is clear: integrate the Edge's desirable ultra-thin design into the Plus without its flaws. This means adopting technologies like silicon-carbon batteries to maintain capacity while slimming down, as seen in phones like the Honor Magic 8 Pro Air. The Plus must evolve from a simple larger model into a distinct, compelling device that balances premium features with a sleek profile, or risk continued consumer indifference.
