Samsung adds PIN verification to Galaxy power‑off in One UI 9

Samsung is tightening shutdown security in the upcoming One UI 9 beta. The power‑off menu still opens normally, but selecting “Power Off” or “Restart” now prompts a verification step that disables all biometrics. Users must enter their PIN, password or pattern before the device actually powers down, preventing thieves from simply switching the phone off, even if the phone is in a pocket.

The change mirrors Samsung’s earlier lockdown mode, which forces a PIN lock and disables trusted devices, voice unlock and lock‑screen notifications. Reddit testers reported that exiting the power menu returns the device straight to the lock screen, and failing the verification leaves the phone in a locked state. This behavior also aligns with enterprise security policies, adding a second layer of resistance to theft tactics.

Google has been rolling out similar anti‑theft measures on Android, including a failed‑authentication lock toggle and smarter PIN‑guess protection. Samsung’s verification requirement could make powering off a stolen Galaxy less attractive to criminals, forcing them to bypass biometric locks first. Overall, the update raises the bar for mobile theft deterrence.
