Google Meet arrives on Android Auto, but only audio

Google is quietly adding Meet to Android Auto, but the implementation is strictly audio‑only. The new app shows a simple interface with Scheduled and History tabs, letting drivers join a call with a single tap while navigation continues. Video is disabled by default, and the only controls are mute, unmute and hang‑up, keeping the dashboard focused on safety while driving.

Android Auto has long supported messaging and phone calls, but video conferencing proved tricky. Earlier this year Google announced plans to bring Meet and Zoom into cars, positioning the feature as a productivity boost for commuters. Yet the rollout feels rushed: work‑profile data, meeting agendas and participant lists are absent, forcing users to rely on their phone for anything beyond basic audio.

While the convenience of joining a call without fumbling for a phone is welcome, the stripped‑down experience limits real collaboration. Google’s decision arrives just days after Apple released a CarPlay version, suggesting a race for dashboard real‑estate rather than a fully thought‑out solution. Drivers who need full meeting functionality will still have to pull over and switch devices.
