Google announced a major Google Home update on May 5, expanding automations for smart devices. Users gain new Security & Access controls for arming security systems, monitoring door locks, and managing binary sensors. Appliance automations now support "Start & Stop" states for washers, dryers, and coffee machines, while vacuum cleaners can dock, pause, or resume on command.

The update prepares for Ask Home on the web, giving computer users access to camera history and device management through a Public Preview. Notifications now feature "Quick Action" for instant device control, with automatic property switching when receiving alerts across multiple homes. The expanded automation options represent Google's push toward more comprehensive smart home management.

Smart cameras receive improved functionality with better media controls and AI descriptors for Premium subscribers. Gemini 3.1 debuts in Google Home, enhancing the AI's ability to understand complex, multi-step requests. Users can swipe through camera views, resize the player, and skip through clips in 10-second increments for clearer insights into home activity.
