Google Genie Maps: AI Transforms Real Streets

Google unveiled its latest innovation at I/O, merging Project Genie with Street View. Users can now select any location in the U.S. and reimagine it through AI transformation. Google Maps becomes a canvas for imagination, allowing Chicago to become a desert wasteland or London to transform into Atlantis. The feature connects real-world imagery with AI creative power.

Project Genie, which made its debut at I/O 2025, now lets users create 720p, 24FPS 3D worlds from written prompts. These AI-generated environments respond to user actions and persist for over a minute. The technology uses "Maps Imagery Grounding" to blend AI creations with actual Street View data, providing a foundation for imaginative reimaginings of familiar places.

The experimental feature begins rolling out today, May 19, to AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. While still in development, the technology demonstrates Google's approach to merging physical and digital worlds. Users can transform cities with different styles, add characters, and explore these AI-enhanced environments, though the company acknowledges the creations may lack the finesse of reality.
