Google is finally rolling out a permanent fix for a frustrating bug that caused its Phone app to rotate unexpectedly during calls. Users reported the issue late last year, where the app would split its interface into a jarring two-view layout. The new update introduces a "Keep portrait mode" toggle in the app's Display settings.

Previously, the Phone app respected the device's global auto-rotate setting, which was problematic when users tilted their phone to their ear. This often triggered an unwanted switch to landscape mode. Google's solution now makes portrait mode the default, aligning with how most people naturally hold their phones during conversations. Users can still toggle the setting if they prefer a rotating UI.

The fix addresses a widespread user grievance that surfaced before the holidays. Google had been testing this control, and it's now widely available for users to enable. This change demonstrates how user feedback directly shapes app development. Future updates may also include other tested features, like "Expressive Calling," which would let users set a reason for urgent calls.
