Audeze LCD‑S20 Review: Premium Planar Sound at Sub‑$500

Audeze released the LCD‑S20 as a mid‑range planar headphone priced at $499, positioning it far below the flagship MM‑500’s $1,699 tag. The closed‑back design improves isolation compared with the open‑back MM‑100, while retaining the brand’s reputation for premium build—aluminum, magnesium and steel chassis with plush fabric‑wrapped ear cups. Six months of daily use convinced reviewer Harish Jonnalagadda that the model fills a long‑standing price gap in Audeze’s lineup.

Both the LCD‑S20 and the higher‑end Maxwell 2 share 90mm planar drivers, Neodymium N50 magnets, Fazor waveguides and SLAM technology, delivering a tight low end and controlled sub‑bass. Measured at 18 Ω and 93 dB/mW, the headphones demand a capable source; paired with a Fiio K19 they reveal rich mids, smooth treble and a respectable soundstage suitable for casual listening or studio monitoring.

At 550 g the LCD‑S20 feels heavier than many competitors, a trade‑off some users may notice during long sessions. Accessories include a detachable 6.35 mm cable with a 3.5 mm dongle, but no carrying case. Despite the heft, the unit’s build quality, planar driver performance and sub‑$500 price make it arguably the best‑valued Audeze offering to date.
