Android's Advanced Theft Protection Already Available Before Rumored iPhone 18 Feature

Apple may be planning to add anti-theft features to the iPhone 18 and iOS 27, but Android users already have access to Google's Advanced Protection suite. The theft detection tools automatically lock devices when suspicious activity is detected and provide remote wipe capabilities through Find Hub. These features launched with Android 16 in early 2026 after beta testing the previous summer.

The protection system includes Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock functionality that secures your device within seconds of being snatched. Identity Check ensures only you can access your phone by requiring authentication when the system detects potential theft. Google designed this as a low-friction experience that works in the background without disrupting daily use.

Available on phones from Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Motorola, Honor and Nothing, the feature isn't universal across all Android devices. Phones like the Fairphone 6 that ship with limited Google services aren't eligible because they lack necessary tracking components. Users can enable Theft Protection through Security & privacy settings in about a minute.

While the feature works seamlessly for most users, those who sideload apps may find restrictions problematic. Battery impact appears minimal based on testing. Android users should enable this protection now rather than waiting for Apple's rumored implementation later this year.
