WhatsApp has begun rolling out username reservations globally, letting users claim unique names before the privacy feature launches later this year. The option appears in Settings > Account > Username once available through in-app notifications.

The feature addresses a long-standing user request by enabling messaging without phone number disclosure. While optional, usernames give users more control over who sees their contact information. WhatsApp emphasizes that people need to know your exact username to contact you initially, maintaining the platform's privacy-first approach.

A claims system helps creators, small businesses, and organizations maintain consistent online identities. These accounts can reserve usernames matching their Instagram or Facebook handles. However, WhatsApp confirmed there won't be a user directory or recommendation system, keeping usernames private by design.

Usernames will roll out gradually over the coming months across different countries. The company recommends choosing usernames known only to intended contacts. More than three billion users on the platform means popular names will likely be claimed quickly, making early reservation worthwhile for those wanting specific handles.
