WhatsApp has begun activating its reserved username feature for a select group of iPhone users. Previously, users could reserve a unique handle through Settings > Account > Username, with options to control contact privacy via a four-digit PIN.

To prevent misuse and impersonation, especially for high-profile usernames also used on other Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram, users may need to verify account ownership. This new activation means users will see a banner on their chat list indicating their username is live and ready to be shared.

The rollout appears to be for both beta and official WhatsApp users, though it is currently limited to a very small number. Users can check their status by looking for the banner or visiting the Username section in their profile settings. If the feature is not yet active, a message will indicate that usernames are "coming soon."
