Spotify hikes US subscription price

Spotify is raising its US subscription fee by 8%, moving its American pricing in line with a global trend. The company confirmed the change in an email to customers, noting the individual Premium plan will increase from $11.99 to $12.99 per month. This adjustment starts on your billing date in February.

The streaming giant had already increased prices across numerous other markets late last year, including the UK, Europe, and parts of Asia and Latin America. For months, the US market was a notable holdout, but this move ends that temporary respite for American subscribers who had avoided the earlier hikes.

While customers face a higher monthly bill, investors responded positively to the revenue potential. Spotify shares reportedly jumped 3% in premarket trading following the announcement. The company states the increase will help fund a 'great experience,' a common industry justification for rising costs as platforms mature.
