Spotify adds universal audio‑only toggle to curb video distractions

Spotify rolled out a universal audio‑only switch that silences virtually all video content in the app. The new controls let users mute music videos, Canvas loops, and any other video—including vertical clips and video podcasts—so they play as pure audio. It works on iOS and Android, syncing across accounts.

The feature debuted globally today, with Family Plan administrators gaining the ability to toggle video on or off for every member via subscription settings. Premium, Duo, Student and free tiers will receive the same options through Settings → Content and display → Videos and Canvas later this month. Ads that contain motion graphics remain unaffected. The option appears instantly in the UI.

By repurposing a parental‑control toggle for all users, Spotify aims to make the listening experience less cluttered on devices where bandwidth or battery life matters. The move also signals that the company sees video as an optional layer rather than a core part of its music service. This benefits commuters and workout listeners.
