SmartGym, Apple's 2023 Apple Watch App of the Year, has launched a major update that brings Strava sync and third-party workout support to its fitness tracking platform. The update, announced today, addresses long-standing user requests by allowing workouts recorded in SmartGym to automatically appear on Strava without manual intervention.

The integration is particularly noteworthy because SmartGym operates independently on Apple Watch, often without an iPhone nearby. Developer Matt Abras explained that delivering this feature required complex behind-the-scenes adjustments to handle workouts recorded directly on the Watch. Beyond Strava, the update enables SmartGym to aggregate workouts from other apps, including Apple Fitness+ and the built-in Workout app, effectively turning it into a central workout dashboard for users who track activities across multiple platforms.

Additional enhancements include flexible time ranges for progress charts, customizable sharing templates with transparency options, and per-measurement unit customization for weight, distance, and body measurements. These refinements aim to make SmartGym more versatile for users who want comprehensive workout tracking and social sharing capabilities. The update positions SmartGym as a more complete fitness ecosystem, bridging the gap between standalone workout tracking and social fitness communities.
