Proton unveiled Lumo 2.0 today, marking the largest upgrade to its privacy-focused AI assistant since its July debut. The update introduces multimodal image recognition and generation, allowing users to analyze and create visuals within encrypted conversations. New memory features enable personalized workflows through encrypted Projects and Custom Lumos, while enhanced web search delivers live results with source citations for more accurate responses.

The Swiss company built Lumo around five privacy principles: no logs, zero-access encryption, no data sharing, no training on conversations, and open-source models. With over 10 million users already adopting Lumo as a private alternative to mainstream AI platforms, Proton is now targeting businesses through Lumo for Business. This enterprise offering includes administrative tools and keeps all data on European infrastructure, shielding organizations from US Executive Orders and data collection requests.

Performance benchmarks show significant improvements. Lumo 2.0 Max scored 240% higher than Lumo 1.4 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which combines nine benchmark tests. Lumo 2.0 Lite improved by 127%. CEO Andy Yen claims the gap has closed to the point where users cannot distinguish Lumo 2.0 Max from leading models by OpenAI and Anthropic in many use cases.

The service launches with core features in the free tier, while Lumo Plus and Lumo Professional offer unlimited chats, advanced image generation, and team collaboration tools. This positions Proton as a viable alternative for users prioritizing privacy without sacrificing capability.
