Meta has launched a dedicated Meta AI desktop app for Mac, marking its latest push into AI technology. The app, version 1.0 beta, is lightweight at just 16MB and runs natively on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later. Built using App Kit and SwiftUI with WebKit, it offers a richer experience than the mobile version, featuring Quick Invoke via Option-Space and a dictation tool for hands-free input across applications like Mail and code editors.

The app supports context gathering by capturing screenshots and reading text from other Mac windows, requiring Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions. Users can access Media, Artifacts, scheduled tasks, and conversation history through the sidebar. Additional features include file attachments, media generation, and customizable thinking modes.

This release follows a series of recent Meta AI updates, including the introduction of Muse Spark in April, voice conversation enhancements in May, and Muse-powered image generation in July. Meta also launched Muse Code, a terminal-based AI coding agent for macOS and Linux, and expanded Meta AI into Threads DMs. The company continues to integrate AI across its ecosystem, despite briefly removing a feature that generated images from public Instagram posts.
