Japan tech groups reject Apple’s new App Store fees

Seven Japanese industry groups representing over 600 companies are rejecting Apple’s new App Store payment rules as economically unviable. The groups, including major IT firms and game developers, say the 15% commission on web-based transactions and additional charges for off-store distribution fail to create genuine payment alternatives.

Last December, Apple announced changes to comply with Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act, allowing developers to link to off-app promotions and offer alternative payment methods. However, the coalition argues these changes come with fee structures that make them unattractive. The groups are specifically calling for Apple and Google to waive commissions on off-App Store transactions.

This pushback follows similar criticism from the Mobile Content Forum in January and represents the latest attempt to pressure Japan’s Fair Trade Commission into further action. The industry groups argue that without fee waivers, the new rules don’t create a competitive market for payment options. Whether regulators will intervene remains uncertain, but the unified opposition from major Japanese tech companies signals significant dissatisfaction with Apple’s compliance approach.
