iOS 27 Beta 2 Brings RCS Reactions and Inline Replies to Messages

Apple released iOS 27 beta 2 to developers today, introducing significant upgrades to RCS messaging in the Messages app. The update addresses long-standing interoperability issues between iPhone and Android users, making cross-platform conversations more seamless. These changes arrive as Apple continues expanding RCS support beyond the basic implementation introduced in recent releases.

Developer Aaron Perris uncovered two major RCS improvements: proper reaction support and inline replies. Previously, iPhone users reacting to Android-shared images would trigger generic notifications like "Aaron loved an image" instead of showing the actual emoji. Now reactions display correctly on Android devices, matching the experience Apple users expect from iMessage. Inline replies allow users to respond directly to specific messages in group conversations.

Both features align with the RCS 2.7 standard, suggesting additional capabilities may be on the horizon. Apple could implement message editing and unsend functions, which are also part of this specification. The company recently added end-to-end encryption for RCS chats, further bridging the gap between RCS and iMessage functionality.

These upgrades make RCS conversations feel more native to iPhone users while improving the experience for Android recipients. Apple's continued investment in RCS standards shows commitment to universal messaging compatibility, even as the company maintains its proprietary iMessage ecosystem for iOS-to-iOS communication.
