iOS 26.5 introduces end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging, enhancing security for cross-platform communication. The feature, labeled beta, requires carrier support and will roll out gradually. Users will see an Encrypted label in the Messages app when conversations are secured.

In the U.S., carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon support the encryption, while Canadian providers Bell and Rogers are also listed. This expansion strengthens Apple’s push for seamless, secure messaging across devices.

The encryption is on by default, eliminating the need for manual activation. However, carriers must adopt Apple’s updated protocol. For global coverage, Apple directs users to its support page, which includes carriers in Europe, Asia-Pacific, and beyond.

This update addresses long-standing security gaps in traditional SMS/MMS systems, positioning Apple as a leader in encrypted mobile communication. However, carrier adoption remains critical to its success.
