Apple has overhauled search in the Messages app for iOS 26, adding natural language capabilities powered by Apple Intelligence. The upgrade allows users to find conversations using conversational queries like "photos of mom during our June trip to the beach" rather than exact keywords. Search now also surfaces related results, connecting terms like "sand" to messages about beaches or oceans.

This enhancement addresses a long-standing pain point for iPhone users who rely heavily on Messages for storing conversations, photos, and media over years of use. Before this update, searching through message archives could be frustratingly imprecise, often requiring exact matches that users might not remember. The new system leverages large language models to understand context and intent.

Apple Intelligence support is limited to newer devices including iPhone 16 and 17 models, iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and the iPhone Air. Users on unsupported devices will continue using the basic search functionality. The AI-powered search activates automatically when Apple Intelligence is enabled, joining 20+ other AI features in iOS 26. This positions Apple to compete more directly with Google's advanced search capabilities in Android's messaging ecosystem.
