HBO Max Shorts Tested on iPhone Users

HBO Max Shorts is currently being tested on a limited number of US iPhone users as Warner Bros expands its streaming catalog into the vertical video format.

The new feature presents short, iconic scenes from the HBO Max library in a vertical, scrollable feed that can be browsed while holding the phone upright or sideways.

The clips are generated by an in‑house AI tool that combs through thousands of hours of titles. Machine‑learning algorithms analyze scene‑level metadata to recommend high‑impact moments, and human editors decide which segments best represent the stories viewers love. Once chosen, the clips are rendered in a new vertical video experience that plays seamlessly on the device.

Content is tailored to each user’s watch history, so the feed shows scenes that align with personal tastes. If a clip captures interest, users can start watching immediately or add it to “My List” directly from the feed. Warner Bros says the feature will later roll out to other devices and markets after the initial iPhone rollout.
