A former Best Buy employee in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, has been charged with orchestrating a months-long fraud scheme that cost the retailer more than $118,000. Police allege that the worker used a manager's override code to apply 99% discounts on MacBook Pro models and other high-value electronics, purchasing them for himself and associates.

Investigators discovered 97 discounted transactions totaling $81,717 for the employee and 52 additional transactions worth $36,573 for others. The scheme came to light in December 2024 when a store manager noticed irregular sales patterns during inventory review. Best Buy hired private investigators who traced the fraudulent purchases through the employee's thumbprint evidence found at local pawn shops where several MacBook Pro models were recovered.

This case highlights growing concerns about employee theft in retail, particularly as high turnover rates make detection more challenging. Industry reports indicate retail chains are increasingly prioritizing internal theft investigations as losses mount. The incident serves as a stark reminder of vulnerabilities in retail point-of-sale systems and the sophisticated methods some employees employ to exploit them for personal gain.
