iPhone Memory Costs to Quadruple by 2027

iPhone memory costs are projected to quadruple by 2027, with memory accounting for 45% of component costs, up from just 10% today, according to JPMorgan analysis. Apple purchases memory for approximately 250 million iPhones annually but has seen its negotiating power diminish as it now competes with rivals for supply rather than setting terms.

The memory shortage stems from a heavily subsidized AI build-out, with companies like Nvidia outbidding consumer electronics makers for limited supply from Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. This shift has already reshaped Apple's product strategy, forcing the company to split the iPhone 18 launch with Pro models debuting in September 2027 and standard models delayed until spring 2027.

With John Ternus taking over as CEO from Tim Cook on September 1, his first major decision will be whether to absorb rising memory costs or pass them to consumers. Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan suggests Apple will likely prioritize market share over margin protection, especially in competitive markets like India and China where local smartphone makers offer lower-priced alternatives.
