Apple Watch Loses Walkie-Talkie in watchOS 27

Apple is removing the Walkie-Talkie app from Apple Watch in watchOS 27 this fall. The push-to-talk feature only worked between Apple Watches and required users to add specific connections and keep the mode active to receive messages, displaying a persistent yellow icon on the watch face.

The feature sat between live calls and voice memos, but the author found it unreliable — never certain recipients could actually hear messages as they played. Despite being a system-level feature for years, adoption seemed limited and the experience felt half-deliberate.

This follows a pattern of Apple Watch experiments that disappear: time-travel complications, the friends circle, Digital Touch, and watch faces like Explorer and Toy Story. Some features get replaced by new system functions like Smart Stack widgets.

A vocal user base relies on Walkie-Talkie for practical communication, spotted recently in work environments. The gap may be filled by a future Apple platform app or third-party developers when watchOS 27 launches.
