Apple launched a new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chips yesterday and is upgrading recent backordered M4 purchases to the new models for free. As reported by Mac Rumors, Apple has contacted customers who ordered M4 Mac mini models before the new lineup was announced. Due to backorders, many M4 orders had not yet shipped.

One customer, Chris Lentz, shared on X that their M4 order with an October 26 delivery date was upgraded to the new model, with delivery moved up to September at the original price. Another Reddit user reported their M4 Pro order was upgraded to an M5 Pro, saving approximately $300 based on new pricing. The upgrades suggest Apple is producing M6 and M5 Pro versions more easily than the previous M4 models.

Customers who recently placed orders for backordered M4 configurations are receiving the newer, more powerful chips at no additional cost.
