Apple Tightens Notification Privacy Rules for EU

Apple has updated its Developer Program License Agreement with strict privacy rules for third-party accessories accessing iPhone notifications and Live Activities. This move follows Digital Markets Act requirements in the EU, which mandate interoperability despite Apple's previously stated concerns about potential privacy and security risks.

The new rules explicitly prohibit third parties from using forwarded notification data for advertising, profiling, training models, or monitoring location. Accessories cannot share this information with other devices or alter content in ways that change its meaning beyond what's necessary for proper display.

Developers face further restrictions on data storage and decryption. Notification data can only be decrypted on the accessory itself, with remote storage prohibited except when essential for delivery. Apple maintains that users will control this feature through system settings, not individual app permissions.
