Apple Testing EU-Compliant Automatic Audio Switching for Third-Party Accessories

Apple is testing a new framework called AudioAccessoryKit that enables automatic audio switching for third-party headphones and accessories in the European Union. This move, driven by the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), allows iOS to intelligently route audio based on whether the accessory is being worn, similar to the experience Apple offers with AirPods. Crucially, the feature is currently limited to development and EU users only, not yet available to the general public.

According to the framework's support documentation, developers can begin testing apps that utilize AudioAccessoryKit on devices in any region, but customer installations of these apps can only function on EU devices signed into an Apple account with an EU country or region. The system requires accessories to be paired via AccessorySetupKit, registered with AudioAccessoryKit, and declare supported features like automatic switching and placement detection. Bluetooth accessories can also report connected devices to help determine the correct audio source.

The framework currently supports iOS 26.4 or later and iPadOS 26.4 or later, but Apple has not yet announced a timeline for a full public release beyond the EU. This testing phase represents a significant shift from Apple's current closed ecosystem, potentially opening up the audio accessory market to more competition while complying with EU regulations.
