Apple stops signing older iOS versions

Apple has ceased signing over-the-air (OTA) and direct IPSW firmware installs for several older iPhone and iPad models. This action prevents users with affected devices from restoring or downgrading to specific, older iOS versions.

Devices impacted include the iPhone 5c (GSM/CDMA), which can no longer install iOS 10.3.3/10.3.4. The iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular is affected by the inability to install iOS 8.4.1 (OTA) or iOS 9.3.5/9.3.6 (IPSW). Additionally, the iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G (CDMA) will not accept iOS 6.1.3 or 8.4.1 (OTA), nor iOS 9.3.5/9.3.6 (IPSW).

While Apple typically stops signing more recent iOS versions shortly after security updates, this move targets a smaller segment of users. However, it impacts those who maintain legacy devices for testing, app compatibility, or archival purposes, effectively closing off restore and installation pathways for these older systems.
