Apple Seeks Tariff Refunds, Plans to Reinvest in U.S. Manufacturing

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the company will chase refunds for tariffs imposed in 2022 that the Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional. The 6‑3 decision invalidated the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, freeing firms to reclaim duties that could total $166 billion. Cook said Apple is following established procedures to file claims to recover the money and use it for U.S. manufacturing.

Apple plans to redirect any recovered funds into U.S. innovation and advanced manufacturing, adding to its prior $600 billion commitment under the American Manufacturing Program (AMP). Last year, AMP consolidated new and existing investments, and recently welcomed partners like Bosch, Cirrus Logic, TDK, and Qnity Electronics. Cook emphasized the money would support domestic production beyond earlier pledges for the five years supporting.

During the Q2 2026 earnings call, Cook also noted a continued Mac desktop shortage, projected to last several months, while reporting $111.2 billion in revenue—a 17% rise year‑over‑year. The tariff refund move signals Apple’s intent to consolidate its U.S. manufacturing strategy, turning past trade disputes into capital for local production and reinforcing the company’s domestic supply chain and sustaining innovation growth.
